Helical Screw Piles
What are screw piles?
Helical Screw pile is another name for helical pile. The pile consists of a galvanized steel shaft. Depending on the application, it can have 2 or more helix plates that are welded to the shaft to form a screw. An excavator is used to install the screw pile into the ground. The torque is measured as it turns the pile into the soil. The initial pile used is called the lead. If it needs to go deeper than the lead, an extension is added to the lead pile. The final depth is achieved when the screw pile hits stable soil and has met the required torque capacity to complete the process.
Helical screw piles, also known as helical piers or screw anchors, are a type of foundation system used in construction to support structures. They consist of a steel shaft with helical blades or plates attached to the end, which are screwed into the ground using hydraulic machinery.
The helical blades act like a screw, allowing the pile to be easily and quickly installed into the soil, without the need for excavation or pouring of concrete. The pile is anchored into the ground at a depth where it can support the weight of the structure, transferring the load from the structure onto the surrounding soil.
Some of the advantages of helical screw piles include:
- Faster installation: Helical screw piles can be installed much faster than traditional concrete foundations, which can save time and money on construction projects.
- Minimal site disturbance: Helical screw piles require minimal site disturbance, as they do not require excavation or the use of heavy equipment.
- Load capacity: Helical screw piles can support heavy loads and can be designed to meet specific load requirements.
- Versatility: Helical screw piles can be used in a variety of soil conditions and can be installed at any angle, making them a versatile option for many different construction projects.
- Cost-effective: Helical screw piles can be a cost-effective foundation solution, particularly for smaller structures or where access to the site is difficult.
Overall, helical screw piles offer a number of advantages over traditional concrete foundations and are becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry.
